Pour une première, la cérémonie récompensant le meilleur athlète masculin et féminin au monde a rallongé cette année à six à raison de trois catégories d'événements de 2 : sur piste, sur route et dans les concours.Ceci s'explique par les performances ahurissantes et le nombre impressionnant de records battus au cours de cette année. Au total 23 nouveaux records ont été établis au cours de l'année 2023.
La kényane de 29 Kipyegon a été distingué meilleure athlète sur piste. La spécialiste en course de fond a établi des records du monde sur trois distances incroyables au cours d'une saison au cours de laquelle elle a également réalisé un doublé en or aux Championnats du monde d'athlétisme de Budapest 23.
Elle est ainsi devenue la première femme à réaliser le doublé 1500/5000, aux championnats du monde à Budapest.
Le Kényan Kelvin Kiptum et l’Ethiopienne Tigst Assefa ont été sacrés dans la catégorie "route" notamment pour leur record hors norme sur marathon respectivement en 2h00 : 35 et 2h11 : 53.
Les médaillés d'or du monde U20 Faith Cherotich et Emmanuel Wanyonyi ont été nommés étoiles montantes de l'année 2023 à l'issue de la compilation des votes.
